biography
Andrea Chiesi is an Italian artist born in Modena on November 6, 1966, recognized as a painter, draftsman, and educator. He grew up within the punk counterculture and independent music scene of the 1980s, beginning his career as an illustrator and draftsman for independent publications and fanzines. Primarily self-taught, he lives and works in San Pancrazio, near Modena. His artistic research spans from ink drawings in black and violet to contemporary landscapes, exploring themes of time, memory, and urban and industrial spaces through a rigorous and meditative oil painting technique.
Chiesi has been awarded several prestigious prizes, including the Cairo Editore Prize in 2004, the Terna Prize in 2008, and the Gotham Prize from the Italian Cultural Institute in New York in 2012. He has completed international artist residencies in New York, Berlin, and Beijing, which have enriched his artistic perspective. His work is characterized by a dialogue between drawing and painting, contrasting a fluid, ever-changing universe with a metaphysical and timeless space.
In addition to his artistic practice, Andrea Chiesi teaches painting at the Academies of Fine Arts in Ravenna and Macerata. He has collaborated with musicians and writers, creating album and book covers, and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. His works frequently appear in contemporary art auctions, including those held by the Cambi auction house, with which he is associated.
