The Department that deals with design auctions was born from the twenty years experience of the experts of Cambi Auction House with the intent to propose to fans and collectors objects belonging to the sphere of modern and contemporary design. Since 2013, the year of the arrival of Piermaria Scagliola, the Department begins to propose half-yearly sales events dedicated exclusively to design, auctions that alternate between Genoa and Milan and that have consecrated Cambi Auction House as a leader in Italy for the design sector.
The design auctions offer a careful selection of rare or unpublished works, furniture and furnishings, lighting, glass, masterpieces signed by the most famous masters of Italian and international design. The boundaries of art, craftsmanship and design are blurred in the works proposed by the Department; that of design represents a category of art increasingly sought after and loved by younger people, struggling with cross collecting.
Among the names and brands of Italian and international design present in the auctions dedicated to design, we remember great designers such as Lucio Fontana, Fausto Melotti, Carlo Mollino, Franco Albini, Max Ingrand, Pietro Chiesa, Paolo Buffa, Carlo Scarpa, Gio Ponti, Gino Sarfatti, Ignazio Gardella, Carlo de Carli, Marco Zanuso, Dube, BBPR, Archizoom, Angelo Lelli, Gabriella Crespi, Osvaldo Borsani, Pietro Fornasetti, Alessandro Mendini, Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Afra e Tobia Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Ingo Mauer, Pierre Jeanneret and famous brands such as Stilnovo, Fontana Arte, Tecno, Arredoluce.
Italian design, in particular, is increasingly appreciated on the art market; this is witnessed by our auctions, increasingly followed by a prepared and demanding clientele. More and more sought after are the rare, unpublished or strange pieces, as well as timeless design works that are often included in our monographic sales.
The design objects that we propose combine the beauty and utility of use with an innate ability to excite, furniture and furnishings that tell in a unique way the style and inspiration, vision and life of those who conceived them. But not only that, the design leaves its mark thanks to the creative urgency and is often witness to the costumes of an era, the everyday life of the past.
Complex and simple in the same way, often experimental, the objects created by revolutionary architects, designers and designers of the twentieth century were spectators of the life of those who chose to surround themselves with art and design revolutionizing, today as yesterday, vision and style.
The Design Department boasts the world record as auctions of a work by Gio Ponti, with the sale of a pair of drawers that have totaled together the figure of € 681,500, from the rooms of Casa Lucano, called Casa di Fantasia, whose furnishings were auctioned in March 2019 in association with Phillips London.
In 2015 the previous record was set, also held by Cambi, for the award of a 1930 low table signed by Giò Ponti, sold for €387,000. Other important awards include works such as the wardrobe with wooden structure and brass details signed Osvaldo Borsani and Lucio Fontana sold for €162,600, a wardrobe made by Lucio Fontana and Osvaldo Borsani awarded €187,000 and the Bazaar sofa by Superstudio sold for €156,350.
