Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and is widely recognized as the father of Pop Art. The son of Slovak immigrant parents, Warhol grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Pittsburgh, where he developed an early interest in drawing and popular culture, inspired by comics, magazines, and photographs. After attending the Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University, he graduated in Pictorial Design in 1949 and moved to New York City to pursue a career as a commercial artist, quickly gaining success as an advertising illustrator for prestigious clients such as Tiffany & Co. and The New York Times.
In the 1950s, Warhol shifted his focus to painting, creating works that would revolutionize the art world. In 1962, with his famous Campbell's Soup Cans series, he launched Pop Art, a movement that elevated mass media images and consumer products to the level of fine art. His Factory, opened in 1964 in New York, became a cultural and creative hub frequented by celebrities, musicians, and artists. Warhol also produced iconic portraits of stars like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, as well as works exploring darker themes such as accidents and death.
His influence extended beyond painting to experimental films and a public persona marked by a detached, monotone demeanor. Warhol died unexpectedly on February 22, 1987, in New York due to complications following gallbladder surgery. His artistic legacy is preserved in museums and collections worldwide and continues to impact contemporary culture.
