biography
George Clare (1830-1900) was a British painter renowned for his highly detailed still life paintings, especially of fruit and flowers. Born in Barnet, Hertfordshire, Clare spent a significant part of his career in Birmingham, where he lived on Bristol Street and maintained an art studio. His distinctive technique involved delicate stippling, influenced by William Henry Hunt and the Pre-Raphaelite movement, emphasizing meticulous detail and naturalistic representation. Clare first exhibited his works in 1864 at prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Royal Society of British Artists, continuing to show his art until 1874. He was also the father and teacher of two successful artist sons, Oliver and Vincent Clare, who followed in his footsteps in still life and floral painting. Later in life, Clare moved to London, where he lived until his death. His paintings are celebrated for their precision and the lifelike quality with which he portrayed nature, making each subject vivid and unique.
