biography
Gino Sarfatti was an Italian artist and designer who revolutionized the world of lighting with his innovative designs. Born in Venice in 1912, Sarfatti was fascinated by the interplay of light and shadow from an early age. He studied engineering at the University of Genoa, but his true passion lay in the world of design.
In 1939, Sarfatti founded the lighting company Arteluce, which quickly became a leading force in the industry. He was known for his minimalist approach to design, using simple shapes and materials to create stunningly beautiful and functional lighting fixtures. His designs were characterized by their clean lines, geometric shapes, and innovative use of materials such as metal, glass, and plastic.
Sarfatti's work was highly influential in the mid-century modern movement, and his designs are still highly sought after today. He was a true innovator, constantly experimenting with new materials and techniques to create lighting fixtures that were both beautiful and functional. His designs were featured in some of the most iconic buildings of the era, including the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
Despite his success, Sarfatti remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to work on new designs until his death in 1985, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire designers and artists around the world. Today, his work is celebrated for its timeless beauty and innovative spirit, and he is remembered as one of the greatest lighting designers of all time.
