biography
Giovanni Ponti, known as Gio Ponti, was one of the most influential Italian architects and designers of the 20th century. Born in Milan on November 18, 1891, he graduated in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1921 after interrupting his studies to serve in World War I. During his career, Ponti founded the renowned magazine "Domus" in 1928, which became a key reference for Italian architecture and design. He collaborated with major companies such as Richard Ginori, revitalizing ceramic production and winning the Grand Prix at the 1925 Paris Exposition.
In 1927, he opened his first studio with architect Emilio Lancia, creating works that blended tradition and modernity, including the house on via Randaccio and the Bouilhert villa. He was also the creative director of Fontana Arte and taught at the Politecnico di Milano until 1961. Among his most famous works is the Pirelli skyscraper in Milan. In 1954, he established the Compasso d’Oro Award, one of the most prestigious design honors.
His work ranged from architecture to industrial design, including furniture, ceramics, glass, and objects of great artistic and commercial value. Ponti remained active until the 1970s, leaving a lasting legacy in international design. He died in Milan on September 16, 1979, in his home on via Dezza, now the site of his archive. His works are frequently featured in auctions by Cambi Casa d'Aste, which promotes their market and historical significance.
