biography
Giorgio de Chirico, born on July 10, 1888, in Volos, Greece, to Italian parents – engineer Evaristo de Chirico and Genoese noblewoman Gemma Cervetto – was an Italian painter, sculptor, and writer, founder of metaphysical painting. Raised between Volos and Athens due to his father's work on the Athens-Thessaloniki railway, he lost his older sister Adelaide in 1891, and his younger brother Andrea became known as Alberto Savinio, a multifaceted artist. After his father's death in 1906, the family moved to Munich, Germany, where de Chirico studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, influenced by Böcklin and Klinger, before moving to Florence, Paris, and Milan.
In 1910 in Florence, his famous metaphysical phase began with iconic works like *The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon* and *The Enigma of the Oracle*, featuring empty squares, long shadows, and enigmatic mannequins that anticipated Surrealism. During World War I, recalled to Italy in 1915 and stationed in Ferrara, he met Carlo Carrà, Ardengo Soffici, and Filippo de Pisis, creating masterpieces such as *Metaphysical Interiors*, *Great Metaphysicals*, *Hector and Andromache*, *The Troubadour*, and *The Disquieting Muses*. In the 1920s, he returned to Paris, where Surrealists hailed him as a precursor but later opposed him; he exhibited internationally, including at the MoMA in New York, and settled permanently in Rome in 1944.
In the 1950s and 1960s, de Chirico participated in Roman Quadrennials (1951, 1955, 1959, 1965, 1972) and turned to bronze sculpture on mythological themes; a major anthology of 180 works was held at Milan's Palazzo Reale in 1970. He died on November 20, 1978, in Rome, in his Piazza di Spagna home now a museum, after a long illness, shortly after his 90th birthday celebrated in the Campidoglio. His legacy, spanning metaphysics, magic realism, and neoclassicism, continues to inspire artists and collectors.
