biography
Giovanni Boldini, born in Ferrara on December 31, 1842, and died in Paris on January 11, 1931, was one of the most important Italian painters of the late 19th century, renowned especially for his elegant and dynamic portraits. The son of a painter of religious subjects, Boldini initially trained by studying 15th-century artworks and later was influenced by the Macchiaioli movement during his time in Florence, which gave his style a more spontaneous approach to nature. Moving to Paris in 1872, he became one of the most sought-after portraitists of the Belle Époque, famous for his flowing and lively style, earning the nickname "Master of Swish." His career was marked by close connections with high society and cultural figures, whom he portrayed with great psychological insight and technical refinement.

Boldini took part in major exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and a solo show in New York in 1897. He was appointed commissioner of the Italian section at the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition and was awarded the Legion of Honor for his artistic contributions. His private life is also documented through his wife Emilia Cadorna, a journalist who published a biography of him. His works remain highly valued and frequently appear in leading auction houses such as Cambi Casa d'Aste.
