biography
Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) was a famous Finnish designer, known for his innovative and functional creations. Born in Helsinki, Tapiovaara studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, where he developed his passion for design and art.
Tapiovaara has worked as a designer for several Finnish companies, including Asko, Helsingin Puusepänteollisuus and Keravan Puusepänteollisuus. He created a wide range of furniture, including chairs, tables, sofas and bookcases, which have become iconic in Finnish design.
His design style was characterised by clean, simple lines that combined functionality and beauty. Tapiovaara also experimented with new materials, such as plywood, which he used to create lightweight and durable furniture.
His works have been exhibited in several international exhibitions, including the Milan Triennale and the Venice Biennale. In 1957, Tapiovaara received the prestigious Gran Premio award at the Milan Triennale for his Domus chair.
