biography
Jean-Michel Folon was a Belgian artist born on March 1, 1934, in Uccle, a municipality of Brussels. The eldest of three siblings, he spent his childhood between Ixelles and Knokke, showing an early passion for drawing over traditional studies. He studied architecture at the Institut Saint-Luc and later enrolled in industrial design at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre in Brussels. In 1955, he left Brussels to settle in Bougival, near Paris, where he dedicated himself daily to drawing and worked as a cartoonist for Belgian and French magazines, initially without much success.
Throughout his career, Folon distinguished himself as a multidisciplinary artist, working with watercolors, painting, engraving, sculpture, tapestries, postage stamps, and theater set designs. His art is known for its poetic and symbolic style, gaining international recognition. In 1985, he moved to Monaco, where he lived until his death on October 20, 2005. He was buried in Monaco Cemetery. His artistic production also includes book covers and posters, and he received acclaim for his contributions to contemporary art.
