biography
Mario Schifano was born in Homs, Libya, in 1934, the son of an archaeologist involved in excavations at Leptis Magna. After moving to Rome post-World War II, he left formal education early to pursue an artistic career, initially influenced by Informal Art. He became a leading figure of Italian Pop Art alongside Franco Angeli and Tano Festa, known for his monochrome paintings and innovative techniques such as computer-generated canvases. His art, organized in thematic cycles like the Anemic Landscapes and Futurist evocations, reflected modern society and mass media. Schifano was a prolific and versatile artist, often called the "puma painter" for his dynamic style and energy. His extensive body of work led to the establishment of a foundation dedicated to preserving and cataloging his art. He died in Rome in 1998, leaving a significant legacy in contemporary Italian art. His works are regularly featured in auctions, notably at the Cambi auction house.
