Il retabolo è eseguito nei modelli del manierismo italiano rinascimentale portati in Spagna da Alonso Berruguete (Valencia 1485/1489 - Toledo 1561). Figlio del pittore Pietro Berruguete, nello studiolo del palazzo ducale di Urbino, seguendo le orme paterne venne in Italia soggiornando e operando tra Roma e Firenze, apprendendo i canoni stilistici del Cinquecento italiano che rielaborò al suo rientro in patria verso il 1517
