L’Imperatrice ha al suo fianco una dama di corte che indossa gli stessi orecchini e la stessa pettinatura dell’imperatrice a ricordare che Wu Zetian, prima di divenire imperatrice, in gioventù fu prima una concubina e successivamente venne nominata quinta dama di corte. L’autore con questo dipinto intende esprimere la grandezza dell’Imperatrice. La lanterna simboleggia la luce che Wu Zetian rappresenta per il suo popolo, l’astro che illumina la Cina.
