The reference 5402, better known as the "Jumbo", is undoubtedly one of the most coveted watches on the market, was produced in 4 batches: A, B, C and D each of these with slightly different design parts.
To receive most of the attention often is the "A Series", but for collectors there is a much more elusive version and that appears very rarely on the market, the reference 5402 "D Series", as the present watch.
The "D Series", according to scholars is the rarest of the references 5402, is believed to have been produced less than 1000 pieces and retains all the design elements that collectors have learned to love, among them: the large case of 39 mm, the tapisserie dial and the unmistakable bracelet, actually uou can notice that the clasp is printed AP and not Audemars Piguet as in the series A and B.
However, the unmistakable feature that distinguishes the watch is the dial: the AP logo is at 12 o'clock, while the A, B and most C Series models have the AP logo at 6 o'clock.
The "D Series" rarely appears on the international auction market and the present model, in excellent condition with a robust case and a sharp dial, offers an unmissable opportunity to purchase one of the rarest versions of the Royal Oak 5402.
This watch in particular belonged to Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger as indicated by the initial sales invoice that reports the sale in Austria in 1979.
F1 drivers and watches have always had a special bond as both motor racing and watchmaking share many of their founding values such as the pursuit of perfection in the details of each piece’s technical components
