The "new" Cosmograph Daytona was launched in 1988, for the first time with an automatic movement that immediately caused a sensation in the passionate audience of the Maison Rolex: waiting lists lengthened in many retailers and this model marked the beginning of Daytona collecting.
The model was available in three variants: steel (16520), steel and gold (16523) and as for our all-gold lot with reference 16528. In the nineties, the company changed the public perception of the brand surpassing the original image of "professional watch company" and embracing the luxury market.
In particular, it was powered by the 4030 calibre, a Zenith El Primero movement modified by Rolex, at the time the most reliable self-winding chronograph available on the market.
The first examples of this reference presented the rare and desirable dial with "6 reversed", as the present lot, also the monochromatic gold livery offers warmth and a unique light much desired by collectors.
