Questa bellissima medaglia celebra contemporaneamente l'elezione e la scomparsa di papa Leone XI il quale sedette sul soglio pontificio solamente per 26 giorni.
La raffigurazione al rovescio richiama l'episodio biblico in cui Sansone uccise un leone vedendo formarsi all'interno della bocca dell'animale uno sciame d'api. L'allegoria, accompagnata anche dalla legenda rivelatrice, evidenzia come la dolcezza fosse una virtù solamente dei forti associando così tale prerogativa anche al pontefice.
