The painterly quality observed is consistent with the production of the period marking Sciltian’s move from Milan to Rome at the end of the 1960s. The work belongs to a significant group of paintings executed in 1970 for the Galleria Russo. Upon arriving in the capital, Sciltian had the opportunity to produce extensively for a wide network of collectors. The works painted during these early Roman years clearly evoke the compositions, still lifes, and trompe l’oeil that made him famous and sought-after on the market starting from the 1940s.
This painting, therefore, fits within a broad series of trompe l’oeil works in which the theme of the glass vase recurs, with Sciltian introducing small variations—choosing different flowers, modifying the objects, or simply changing their arrangement on the support surface. This compositional approach represents a significant novelty for Sciltian compared to his usual practice.
