In the early 1920s, Grosz created a vast body of drawings and watercolors focusing on political and social themes, many of which he published in his so-called "educational books" (Libri didattici), issued by the Malik Verlag in Berlin. Nothing escaped the artist's obsessive observation, as he ruthlessly captured with his pen drawings everything that his eye and imagination suggested to him.
Berlin street scenes with different people and characters walking up and down the streets or occupying them in various ways are typical of Grosz's work in the 1920s until he left Berlin in 1933 to emigrate to New York. In this very scene, “Nach Hause” (On the way home), an utterly drunk man is seen staggering down the street.
Well-dressed, briefcase in hand, he looks like a businessman who, after work, got lost in one of the local bars, probably drinking with friends to the point of having trouble finding his way home. [...]
