Elegant and discreet, reference 3940 was introduced to the market in 1985, defying the crisis that the traditional watchmaking market was experiencing at the time due to the advent of quartz technology. Instead of following the trends of the era, Philippe Stern decided to embrace the Maison's tradition, focusing on the creation of two complex mechanical references: the 3940 and its chronograph counterpart, the 3970.

This piece belongs to the third series (1995-2007), the model's most mature and technically refined iteration. The 36 mm white gold case houses the ultra-thin caliber 240/114, a further evolution of the 240 Q found in the first and second series. With a thickness of just 3.75 mm, this movement not only ensures an extremely slim profile, enhancing the elegance of the flat case on the wrist, but also provides the precision required to power a complex perpetual calendar.
