Description

Diorite

Cm 4,5X4,5X7
Plagioclase (andesine) + hornblende/biotite — medium- to coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock
More information
Found worldwide, with historical specimens from Egypt, Italy, and Scandinavia, it has an intermediate composition, with little or no quartz. It forms through the slow crystallization of magma at depth (plutonic), typically within
magmatic arcs. Density: 2.8–3.0 g/cm³; it has a grayish-white, phaneritic-crystalline texture with dark spots.

Historically used for statues and monuments (the “Stele of Hammurabi” in diorite is famous); today used as an ornamental and building stone due to its strength; prized by collectors of plutonic rocks.
