Typically originating from Brazil, Uruguay, Morocco, and Madagascar, these are cut and polished sections of geodes containing agate, a microcrystalline variety of quartz, deposited in concentric bands within volcanic cavities through the cyclic precipitation of colloidal silica colored by metal oxides.

Widely used for bookends, coasters, and decorative items; prized by collectors for its endless variety of patterns; sometimes artificially dyed to intensify the colors.
