Found worldwide, with classic specimens from
Missouri (USA), Peru, Morocco, and Sardinia (Italy), this is the
principal ore of lead, often containing trace silver . It forms in
hydrothermal veins and Mississippi Valley-type deposits within
carbonate rocks. Hardness 2.5 Mohs, very high density (7.2–7.6
g/cm³), perfect cubic cleavage, intense metallic luster .
Historically mined for lead and
silver since antiquity; highly valued by collectors for its perfect cubic
crystals;
