Description
Magliano Jasper Sphere

SiO₂ (chalcedony/microcrystalline quartz, jasper variety) — brecciated microcrystalline structure, trigonal system
More information
It takes its name from the village of Maligano on the island of Sulawesi (Indonesia) and is a recently discovered jasper that has only been on the international market for a few years. It is believed to have formed in ancient volcanic areas with hot springs: the original, fractured jasper was re-cemented by siliceous solutions that filled the cracks with contrasting-colored material, producing its characteristic mosaic-like brecciated structure. Colors range from red and orange to shades of gray and blue, sometimes featuring small druse-like quartz cavities and dendritic patterns reminiscent of river landscapes with small bushes. Hardness 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, density approximately 2.6 g/cm³.
Highly prized by gem cutters and collectors for its brecciated and landscape-like patterns, which are unique to each piece; used for beads, hearts, cabochons, and carved objects. Since this is a relatively new commercial material, information on the deposit is still limited and is partly derived from sellers rather than scientific literature.
