biography
Adolfo Wildt was one of the most important Italian sculptors between the 19th and 20th centuries, renowned for his marble sculptures that blend simplicity and sophistication. Born in Milan to a family of Swiss origin, Wildt began his artistic training at a very young age, working as an apprentice to a barber, goldsmith, and marble craftsman before joining the workshop of sculptor Giuseppe Grandi at eleven. He furthered his education at the Brera School of Applied Arts, honing both his technical and humanistic skills, including studying Dante's Divine Comedy and the Bible.

Throughout his career, Wildt collaborated with prominent Lombard sculptors and was admired by contemporaries such as Auguste Rodin and Adolf von Hildebrand, who praised his ability to give his sculptures an opalescent transparency. His first exhibited work, a portrait of his wife, was purchased by the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, marking the start of a successful career that included numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad.

A member of the Accademia d'Italia from 1929, Wildt was regarded as an artist of great stature, although his fame waned after World War II before being rediscovered in the 1980s. His works, characterized by expressionist and symbolist modeling, represent a bridge between classical tradition and modernist experimentation. The auction house Cambi has frequently featured his works, underscoring the continued collector interest in his art.
