biography
Carlo Bugatti (Milan, December 6, 1855 – Molsheim, March 31, 1940) was an Italian cabinetmaker, designer, and politician of great significance in the European Art Nouveau movement. Born in Milan to Giovanni Luigi Bugatti, a sculptor and architect, and Amalia Salvioni, he received an excellent artistic education: in 1875 he was enrolled at the Accademia di Brera and subsequently at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. In 1880 he married Teresa Lorioli, with whom he had three children: Ettore, who would become the celebrated founder of the Bugatti automobile factory, Deanice, and Rembrandt.
Carlo Bugatti's career took off in 1888, when he opened his workshop at via Castelfidardo 6 in Milan, after refining his skills in the studio of cabinetmaker Mentasti. That same year he established himself as a cabinetmaker at the Italian Exhibition of Fine Arts in London. During his Milan years, he collaborated with talented artists such as the divisionist painter Giovanni Segantini, his brother-in-law, and Emilio Longoni, as well as cabinetmaker Eugenio Quarti. In 1890 he expanded his influence by opening a studio-workshop in Paris, where his furniture received widespread international recognition. At the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition, his creations were awarded a medal that confirmed the international triumph of the Art Nouveau style, consolidating his reputation as a master of decorative design.
Bugatti worked between Italy and France for much of his career, participating in numerous international exhibitions that testified to his eclectic style and innovative use of materials and decorations. In 1910 he left Paris and moved to Pierrefonds in the Oise, where he became mayor. The last years of his life were marked by dramatic events: the suicide of his son Rembrandt in 1916, the death of his daughter Deanice, and that of his wife Teresa. In 1935, following these losses, he moved to Alsace in Molsheim, where his son Ettore had established the famous Bugatti automobile factory. Here Carlo Bugatti spent his final years, dying in March 1940 and resting in the Dettwiller cemetery.
