biography
Piero Manzoni, born on July 13, 1933, in Soncino, province of Cremona, into an aristocratic family, was a revolutionary Italian artist and precursor of conceptual and poor art. Raised between Milan and Albissola Marina in Liguria, where he spent summers, Manzoni showed early artistic talent, taking private painting lessons from 1950 and briefly attending the Brera Academy. Largely self-taught, he abandoned studies in Law and Philosophy to fully dedicate himself to art, influenced by figures like Lucio Fontana and the Nuclear Art Movement, with which he exhibited in 1957 at the San Fedele Gallery in Milan.

In the 1950s, Piero Manzoni rapidly evolved from informal and abstract painting to radical experiments, creating the first monochrome *Achromes*, imprints of objects dipped in color, and tar paintings. In 1956, he published the manifesto *For an Organic Painting* and debuted at the Fair Market of the Sforzesco Castle in Soncino. With Enrico Castellani, he founded the *Azimuth* magazine and gallery in 1959, producing iconic works like the *Lines* – continuous traces sealed in cylinders – and *Living Sculptures*, people certified as artworks with *Certificates of Authenticity* signed by the artist, including Umberto Eco and shoes by Franco Angeli. His provocation peaked in 1960 with the performance *Consumption of Art – Eating Art* at the Azimut Gallery, where he distributed signed hard-boiled eggs to be eaten.

In 1961, **Piero Manzoni** created his most famous and scandalous work, *Artist's Shit*: 90 sealed cans containing his feces, sold at gold-equivalent weight, challenging the art market and the concept of aesthetic value. He also designed *Bases of Genius* and stayed in Denmark for experiments with pneumatic spheres. His brilliant career ended tragically on February 6, 1963, when he died at just 29 from a heart attack in his Milan studio, leaving a legacy of innovation that influenced the international avant-garde. Today, **Piero Manzoni works** like *Artist's Shit*, *Lines*, and *Achromes* are among the most sought-after at auctions, symbols of irreverent and genius art.
