biography
Piero Ruggeri was a prominent Italian painter born in Turin in 1930 and passed away in 2009 in Avigliana, where he lived and worked for over forty years. He graduated in 1956 from the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti in Turin and participated in the Venice Biennale the same year, also attending subsequent editions in 1958, 1962 (with a personal room), and 1978. Ruggeri was a leading figure in Italian informal painting, initially embracing this movement and later incorporating elements of abstract expressionism with European and American influences. His art is marked by deep critical reflection and ongoing dialogue with the pictorial tradition, as evidenced by explicit references to masters such as Tintoretto, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Mattia Preti, Goya, and Monet in the titles of his works.

Throughout his career, Ruggeri exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, including the São Paulo Biennale (1961 and 1963) and the Rome Quadriennale (1960, 1973, 1999). He received prestigious awards such as the Morgan’s Prize, the Paint Solomon Guggenheim Prize in New York, the Marzotto Prize, the São Paulo Prize, the Fiorino Prize, and the Lissone Prize. From 1963 to 1985, he taught figure drawing at the Renato Cottini Art High School in Turin and was a member of the National Academy of San Luca from 1995 until his death.

His work, praised by renowned critics like Maurizio Calvesi and Luigi Carluccio, has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Ruggeri's artworks are frequently auctioned, notably by the Cambi auction house, which has handled many of his pieces with significant estimates and sales. He is remembered as a cultured and innovative artist who renewed the language of 20th-century Italian painting through expressive and chromatic intensity.
