biography
Pietro Chiesa was a prominent Italian designer and artist born in Milan in 1892 and passed away in Paris in 1948. After studying in Grenoble and Turin, he joined the workshop of designer and painter Giovanbattista Gianotti, where he developed a strong passion for glass, which became the core material of his artistic production. In 1921, he opened his own studio, focusing on creating glass works characterized by geometric shapes and opalescent glass, establishing himself as a key figure in 20th-century Italian design. In 1927, he co-founded the “Labirinto” association alongside notable figures such as Paolo Venini and Gio Ponti, promoting high-quality furniture production in the Novecento style.
In 1933, his studio was incorporated into the newly founded company Fontana Arte, established by Luigi Fontana and Gio Ponti, where Chiesa became the artistic director. In this role, he developed numerous innovative prototypes, treating glass as a precious element and experimenting with cutting and grinding techniques that gave objects a sculptural plasticity. His creations, including lamps and ashtrays, are distinguished by simple yet monumental lines, reflecting a blend of functional and artistic design.
Pietro Chiesa’s works are internationally recognized and appreciated, featured in prominent museums and collections. The Cambi auction house, specialized in modern art and design, is among the institutions that promote and value his works in the contemporary art and collecting market.
His influence in glass design and 20th-century furniture remains significant, demonstrating a balance between technical innovation and artistic sensitivity that helped define Italian aesthetics of the period.
