Description

Buddhist manuscripts in Khmer with drawings of characters and deities, folded in on itself 51 times, Cambodia, 19th centu [..]

This Buddhist folding manuscript book is made from sleuk rith, the earliest book form of the Khmer Empire—similar to those in South Asia—crafted from bundles of palm leaves. Similar illustrated Buddhist manuscripts from Southeast Asia are renowned for their depictions of scenes from the life of the Buddha and the Jataka tales (stories of the Buddha’s past lives). These scenes are exquisitely rendered and often highly detailed. While most of these manuscripts date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, their illustrations are based on much older Pali texts that originated in Sri Lanka as early as the 1st century BCE. The exceptional beauty of these manuscript paintings lies in their depiction of the natural environment surrounding the central figure—the historical Buddha—emphasizing his deep connection with nature and all living beings.
