Clemente XIV si distinse per il suo amore per le arti: nonostante le condizioni ecomoniche pontifice fossero deficitarie acquistò opere d'arte e oggetti d'antiquariato dalle ricche famiglie romane per evitare che questi capolavori abbandonassero Roma. Fu trasformata una parte del giardino di Innocenzo VIII in una galleria di statue che costituitì il nucleo primitivo del Museo vaticano (detto anche clementino in onore del suo fondatore).
