La cappella ottagonale dedicata alla Vergine venne commissionata da Leone XII all'architetto Giuseppe Valadier per onorare la sua terra natia, Genga, comune appenninico ubicato nell'attuale provincia di Ancona. La costruzione, completata dall'architetto Francesco Bartolini, si rivelò estremamente suggestiva in quanto sorgeva esattamente al centro di una grotta naturale. L'intera cappella, decorazioni e statue comprese, venne inoltre realizzata utilizzando materiali provenienti dalle stesse grotte limitrofe.
