More information
The Rolex Daytona is one of the most beloved models among collectors, perfectly embodying the spirit of the tool watch, originally designed for motor racing and named after one of the most iconic circuits in the United States.
The first reference introduced was the 6239, produced starting in 1963. Available in both stainless steel and yellow gold, it featured pump pushers, a metal bezel, and a variety of dial configurations.
In 1965, the 6241 was launched, distinguished by the use of a bakelite bezel insert.
Over the following years, additional references were introduced: the transitional 6240, which was the first to feature screw-down pushers; the 6262, equipped with the updated Caliber 727; and the 6264, very similar to the 6241 but with the upgraded movement and a different font for the tachymeter scale. Among the steel models, the 6265 stood out with its screw-down pushers, steel bezel, and a wide array of dial options, remaining in production from 1971 to 1988. Two additional references, the 6269 and 6270, combined gold cases with precious stones, representing the most luxurious manual-wind Daytonas.
The present lot, a 6241 produced in 1968, features a rare two-tone dial, less commonly seen than the versions with red outer minute tracks. While this dial variant can appear in the latest serial numbers of the 6241, it is more typically associated with the 6262 and 6264 references.
Known as the “Paul Newman” dial, named after the legendary actor who famously wore one, this version is defined by its Panda or Reverse Panda configuration, with sub-dials featuring Art Deco-style numerals. Adding contrast and character, the iconic Daytona signature appears in red above the 6 o'clock sub-dial.
