Pietro Chiesa's work for Fontana Arte in the mid-1930s represents one of the high points of European design culture, a moment in which everyday objects shed their domestic function to become “pure form.” These two tables in cut glass do not belong to the history of furniture, but to the history of space.
In the 1934 model (mentioned in Domus no. 83), Chiesa performs a true architectural transposition. The supports, composed of a stratification of curved and ground glass slabs, recall the tectonics of the great Milanese buildings of the time. Giuseppe Pagano's ethical rigor can be seen: the structure is honest, declared, without masking. Yet their geometric grandeur evokes the simplified classicism of Giovanni Muzio or the monumentalism of Marcello Piacentini. Chiesa succeeds in a formal paradox: he gives glass—the ephemeral material par excellence—the solemnity of a Doric column or a marble pillar in the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana.
In the second example, characterized by curved supports with wooden inserts, Gio Ponti's influence emerges with overwhelming force. Here, design becomes “manner,” mediating between the radical functionalism of Piero Bottoni and the decorative grace of Emilio Lancia.
The curve is not an ornamental feature, but a structural tension that interacts with light. In this piece, Chiesa addresses the rationalist theme of “subtraction”: the table does not occupy a volume, but defines it through its luminous boundaries. The inclusion of wood at the base is not only functional, but also a reference to the earth, a material counterpoint that enhances, by contrast, the “celestial” and airy nature of the cut crystal.
