Description

Augite on lava

Cm 5X4,5X6,5
(Ca,Mg,Fe,Al)2(Si,Al)2O6 โ€” clinopyroxene, monoclinic system, on a lava matrix
More information
Typical of the Vesuvius/Phlegraean Fields volcanic area (Italy), these are augite crystals embedded in a basaltic-tephritic lava matrix. They form through early crystallization within the magma before or during eruption (as phenocrysts), typically in Quaternary volcanic settings. Hardness 5.5โ€“6.5 Mohs, greenish-black color , short prismatic habit.
A piece of great interest to collectors and volcanologists as direct evidence of magmatic processes; used in educational and museum displays; rarely used in jewelry due to low transparency .
