Description

Selenite

Cm 5X5X6
CaSO4·2H2O — monoclinic system
(crystalline gypsum variety)
More information
Typically sourced from Mexico (Naica), Morocco, and the United States, this
forms through evaporation of sulfate-rich waters in sedimentary
basins or low-temperature hydrothermal environments (famously the
giant crystals of the Cueva de los Cristales, Naica). Very low hardness
(2 Mohs), density 2.3 g/cm³, perfect cleavage into flexible sheets.
Widely used in décor and crystal healing (wands,
spheres, lamps); prized by collectors for its transparency; fragile and
moisture-sensitive, requiring careful handling.
