biography
Achille Perilli was an Italian painter and sculptor born in Rome on January 28, 1927, and passed away in Orvieto on October 16, 2021. After attending classical high school, he enrolled in literature studies, preparing a thesis on Giorgio de Chirico, although he did not graduate. In the post-World War II period, Perilli co-founded the Forma 1 Group, an avant-garde artistic movement inspired by Marxism, which included artists such as Carla Accardi, Ugo Attardi, and Pietro Consagra. His art is characterized by geometric abstraction and abstract formalism, exploring irregular geometric shapes and a rationalized use of space and color.
Perilli exhibited extensively, participating in several editions of the Venice Biennale (1952, 1958, 1962, 1968) and the Rome Quadriennale (from 1948 to 1986). In 1963-64, he took part in the touring exhibition "Peintures italiennes d'aujourd'hui" across the Middle East and North Africa. Throughout his career, he experimented with innovative techniques such as graffiti incorporating various materials, moving towards informalism while maintaining a strong geometric foundation.
In 1995, he became a member of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca and in 1997 received a prestigious award from the President of the Italian Republic, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro. His work is recognized for its significant contribution to 20th-century Italian abstract art, with creations appreciated nationally and internationally. Achille Perilli is remembered as a master of abstraction who combined formal rigor with expressive research.
