biography
Luigi Filippo Tibertelli, known as Filippo De Pisis, was born in Ferrara on May 11, 1896, into a family of noble origins. The third of seven children of Count Ermanno Tibertelli and Giuseppina Donini, De Pisis grew up in a culturally stimulating environment that fostered his natural inclination toward art and literature. In 1916 he began painting under the influence of Carlo Carrà, Giorgio de Chirico, and Alberto Savinio, coming into contact with the metaphysical movement. Simultaneously, he continued his literary studies, enrolling at the Faculty of Letters at the University of Bologna, where he graduated in 1920 with a thesis on Ferrarese Gothic painters.
De Pisis's artistic career developed across multiple European cities. In 1925 he moved to Paris, where he formed relationships with important artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and George Braque. In 1926 he founded the group "Italiani di Parigi" together with de Chirico, Massimo Campigli, and Mario Tozzi. During the 1930s he participated in numerous successful exhibitions both in Italy and abroad, consolidating his international reputation. Beyond painting, De Pisis distinguished himself as a writer and art critic, collaborating with important Italian newspapers.
In 1939, due to the worsening of neurasthenia diagnosed to him as early as 1904, De Pisis decided to return to Italy, settling first in Milan and subsequently in Venice in 1943. In Venice he found inspiration in the lagoon's pictorial tradition, studying eighteenth-century masters such as Francesco Guardi. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1948, 1950, and 1954, receiving significant recognition. Between 1954 and 1955 he was hospitalized at the Villa Turro psychiatric hospital. Filippo De Pisis died in Milan on April 2, 1956, at his brother Francesco's home. In 1998 a museum dedicated to him was established in his native city, the Museo Filippo de Pisis, which houses over two hundred works representative of his entire artistic career.
