The catalogue includes works by masters such as Giorgio de Chirico, Alberto Martini, Tino Stefanoni, Enrico Castellani, Piero Dorazio and Piero Manzoni, as well as prints by Pablo Picasso, offering a broad and articulate overview of the artistic landscape of the 20th century and contemporary art.
Among the most significant lots are several works of outstanding quality. Of particular interest is Ship Stranded Near a Coast with Ruins by Arturo Nathan, painted in 1929 in his characteristic visionary style. Alongside it, Mario Sironi’s Apocalypse, created around 1961, testifies to the dramatic and symbolic force of the artist at the height of his maturity and toward the end of his career. Also featured is a selection of masterpieces by Antonio Donghi, such as Roman Landscape (1938) and Musical Instruments (1942), which represent the most lyrical and suspended side of Magic Realism. Complementing these is a rare Venetian view from the early 1960s by Giorgio de Chirico, Venice – Doge’s Palace, an ideal synthesis of classicism and metaphysical atmosphere.
The catalogue also includes important post-war and contemporary works. The section is led by a precious 1952 Still Life by Giorgio Morandi—one of the top lots of the auction—an impeccable example of his poetics of silence and restraint. Also featured is a significant work by Piero Manzoni, Tenderly (circa 1957), a testament to his experimental phase preceding the Achromes. Within the contemporary section stand out the monumental sculpture Luci di Nara (2014) by Igor Mitoraj, the bronze Dragonfly (2019) by Matteo Pugliese, and the large composition Carlina (1998) by Julian Schnabel, a materially rich work of strong visual impact.
The sale also features a special group of works—lots 97–131—coming from the collection of the San Patrignano Foundation. For the first time, the Community is offering at auction a selection of works from its contemporary art collection for charitable purposes, with proceeds going toward energy-efficiency projects for the facility. Founded in 1978 and recognised as the largest drug rehabilitation community in Europe, San Patrignano has welcomed over 26,000 young people, offering them a completely free path toward social reintegration.
The group of works in the auction reflects the significance of the collection, developed thanks to the generosity of artists, collectors and gallerists within an innovative endowment model. Among the selected works are, among others, a large sculpture by Igor Mitoraj, a painterly installation by Pino Pinelli, a monumental canvas by Julian Schnabel, along with works by highly appreciated contemporary Italian artists such as Bertozzi & Casoni and Matteo Pugliese.
