Genoa, March 13, 2024. Cambi Casa d'Aste is pleased to announce for next March 28 two important appointments that will be held in the Genoese headquarters of the maison: a real journey through the artistic production of the 19th and 20th centuries that kicks off at 2 p.m. with the session dedicated to sculptures and continues at 4 p.m. with paintings.
Regarding the first appointment, among the nearly 200 pieces that will be presented, the imposing cast bronze sculpture (110x70x190 centimeters) entitled The Work, signed in 1895 by Benedetto Civiletti (1845 - 1899), should certainly be noted. Two specimens of this important work were executed by Civiletti: one placed in Piazza Castelnuovo in Palermo, and this one now at auction (estimate: 15,000 - 20,000) that was commissioned by entrepreneur and politician Ignazio Florio and placed in the garden of Villa Florio in Favignana.
Other lots of sure interest, the nucleus of bronze animalier sculptures (among them: bison, bulls, eagles, herons, chamois, hawks, a deer, various canine specimens) that will each be beaten between 200 and 1,200 euros, and a series of beautiful sculptures by Sirio Tofanari (1886 - 1969) such as La Carezza, in cast and patinated bronze from the Antonacci Gallery in Rome (estimate: 12. 000 - 18,000 euros), The Antelopes (mother and cub), size 20x13x19 centimeters (estimate: 2,000 - 3,000 euros) and, again, the large Dying Antelope (104x67 centimeters), formerly from the Gianna Ronchi Collection, a painter of Lombard chiarismo, offered from an auction base of 15,000 - 20,000 euros and the elegant Baboon in cast and patinated bronze on a marble base (estimate: 8,000 - 10,000).
Turning to the session devoted to paintings, which will feature an exceptional catalog in terms of the variety of works and artists involved, among the top lots the three absolute masterpieces signed by the masters of Italian Divisionism Angelo Morbelli and Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo stand out above all.
By Angelo Morbelli - born in Alessandria in 1853 and died in Milan in 1919 - two paintings are presented: an extraordinary oil on canvas entitled Tetti sotto la neve (Rooftops under the Snow) that he made in 1912, signed and dated at lower left (70x132.5 cm) and starting at a base auction price of between 200,000 and 300,000 euros, and Partita interessante, a painting signed and dated 1904 (55x88 cm), estimated at between 150,000 and 200,000 euros.
By Pellizza da Volpedo, on the other hand - who was born and died in Volpedo in the province of Alessandria (1868 - 1907) - the house offers La Clementina, a work signed and dated 1904 that depicts a locality near the artist's hometown with a farmstead in the background and a tree in the center. The work, which starts at an auction base of between 80,000 and 120,000 euros (50x80 cm is the format), represents a moment in the early twentieth century when the artist was particularly dedicated to the study of landscape, inspired by his trip to Paris for the 1900 World's Fair and his visit to the Venice Biennale in 1901.
