Genoa, Feb. 23, 2024. Cambi is pleased to announce a new edition of the live auction Antique and Rare Books, Antique Prints, Views and Maps, the event to be held on March 14, 2024, at Mackenzie Castle in Genoa and will feature a wide and diverse selection of antique books, maps, engravings, maps and manuscripts.

The rich catalog consists of three sections. In the first, dedicated to the old and great masters of engraving-from Albrecht Dürer to Rembrandt to Francisco Goya-a very select collection of engravings by Canaletto will also be hammered out.

The second section will offer a fine selection of maps, views, and decorative prints, and among them a large sampler of maps from the most important atlases published from the 16th to the 18th century along with several city views, city plans, including a significant collection of prints from the Veneto and concerning Venice and the Venetian domains.

Finally, in the third section, with the largest number of lots and specifically dedicated to ancient and rare books, Cambi Auction House will present a wide selection of printed editions, from their origins (15th century) to the 20th century. These include a rich collection of books of chivalric epics printed from the 16th to the 18th century, along with a collection of books on Bergamo and Bergamo's history. There are also many Cinquecentine and Seicentine books; also worth mentioning is a significant and interesting selection of geographical atlases.

Among the top lots of the appointment, some excellencies should certainly also be mentioned, such as the Hypnerotomachia poliphili (Venice,1545), presented in a rare second edition that follows the first of 1499. Printed by the heirs of Aldo Manuzio, who had published the first edition, this extraordinary piece is considered, especially for its iconographic apparatus, a masterpiece of the Venetian typographic renaissance and one of the most beautiful and valuable books for many bibliophiles.

Another outstanding piece, the Theatrum orbis Terrarum (Antwerp, 1571-1573) by Ortelius Abrams, here in a valuable second edition containing 71 finely hand-colored maps.

And, again, one of the most significant works by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, a celebrated geographer and cosmographer of the Most Serene Republic of Venice: The Atlante Veneto, tome one (Venice, 1690-95) with coeval binding and gold title and friezes on the spine.

Another particularly important lot is the collection Raphael's Loggias (18th century) engraved by Giovanni Volpato and other celebrated Veneto engravers: an album collecting the 30 most significant large-format plates documenting the work of the Vatican Loggias, one of the masterpieces of decorative art of all time.

Not to be missed, then, is a first edition of the Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers by Diderot and D'Alembert (Paris, 1751 - 1772), the first example of an encyclopedic work, a milestone of the Enlightenment but also of all Western culture: it will be offered in its original and excellently preserved binding.

Finally, also worth mentioning is La Fontaine's Fables published by Teriade in Paris in 1952: a two-volume work illustrated by 100 original etchings by Marc Chagall.
